What Is the Federal Acquisition Regulation?
The Federal Acquisition Regulation (FAR) is the rulebook for all federal government purchasing. Every civilian agency — from the Department of Energy to NASA to the Department of Veterans Affairs — must follow FAR when buying goods and services with taxpayer money. It lives at Title 48 of the Code of Federal Regulations and is maintained jointly by the Department of Defense, GSA, and NASA.
FAR Part 52 is the section contractors care about most. It contains every standard contract clause and solicitation provision — the boilerplate legal language that flows into your contract. When you sign a government contract, you are agreeing to be bound by whichever Part 52 clauses the contracting officer incorporated, either explicitly or by reference.
Understanding which clauses are in your contract, what they require, and which must flow down to your subcontractors is not optional compliance work — it is the foundation of risk management for any government contractor.
FAR vs DFARS — What Is the Difference?
| FAR | DFARS | |

| Relationship | Base regulation | Supplement — adds to FAR, does not replace it |

FAR & DFARS Questions Answered
What is the Federal Acquisition Regulation (FAR)?
The Federal Acquisition Regulation (FAR) is the primary set of rules governing all federal government procurement in the United States. Codified at Title 48 of the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR), it establishes uniform policies and procedures that all federal executive agencies must follow when purchasing goods and services. FAR Part 52 contains the contract clauses and solicitation provisions that appear in government contracts.
What is the difference between FAR and DFARS?
FAR (Federal Acquisition Regulation) applies to all federal agencies — civilian and military. DFARS (Defense Federal Acquisition Regulation Supplement) is a supplement that applies specifically to Department of Defense contracts (Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, etc.). DFARS clauses are numbered in the 252.xxx series and layer additional requirements on top of the base FAR clauses — particularly in areas like cybersecurity (DFARS 252.204-7012), buy American requirements, and specialized DoD systems.
How many FAR clauses are there?
FAR Part 52 contains over 500 clauses and solicitation provisions, and DFARS Part 252 adds another 400+ clauses specific to DoD contracts. This reference tool indexes 959 clauses across both regulations. Not every clause appears in every contract — the contracting officer selects clauses based on contract type, dollar value, set-aside type, and what the agency is buying.
Which FAR clauses flow down to subcontractors?
Flow-down clauses are FAR or DFARS provisions that prime contractors must pass through to their subcontractors. Common mandatory flow-downs include FAR 52.222-26 (Equal Opportunity), FAR 52.222-35 (Veterans Employment), FAR 52.204-21 (CUI safeguarding for applicable work), and DFARS 252.204-7012 (cybersecurity) for covered defense information. The specific clauses depend on the dollar value of the subcontract and whether the work involves the same subject matter. You can filter this tool by "Flow-down required" to see which clauses carry that obligation.
How often is FAR updated?
FAR is updated continuously through a notice-and-comment rulemaking process administered jointly by DoD, GSA, and NASA. Major updates — called FAC (Federal Acquisition Circular) for FAR and DFARS PGI updates for DFARS — are published multiple times per year in the Federal Register and take effect immediately or on a specified date. This tool is updated monthly from eCFR data to reflect current clause text.
Where can I find the official FAR text?
The authoritative source for FAR clause text is the Electronic Code of Federal Regulations (eCFR) at ecfr.gov, specifically Title 48. Each clause card in this tool links directly to the corresponding eCFR page. You can also access FAR at acquisition.gov, which is the official FAR website maintained by the Civilian Agency Acquisition Council (CAAC) and the Defense Acquisition Regulations Council (DARC).
