What is a PSC Code?
A Product and Service Code (PSC) is the 4-character code the federal government uses to classify every contract it awards. Every solicitation on SAM.gov carries a PSC. Every award reported to USASpending.gov is tagged with one too.
PSC codes follow a simple pattern. Letters indicate services — D for IT, R for Professional Services, Y for Construction. Numbers indicate products — 70 for IT Equipment, 65 for Medical Supplies, 89 for Food.
Knowing your PSC codes lets you filter SAM.gov searches down to only the work you can win — instead of wading through thousands of irrelevant solicitations every day.
PSC vs NAICS — What Is the Difference?
Both codes are required for government contracting. They answer different questions.
| NAICS Code | PSC Code | |
|---|---|---|
| Classifies | Your business | What the government is buying |
| Format | 6 digits | 4 characters (letter or number prefix) |
| Registered in | SAM.gov profile | On the solicitation itself |
| Used for | Small business size standards, set-aside eligibility | Filtering solicitations, analyzing spend by category |
| How many per business | Multiple (primary + secondary) | As many as match your offerings |

PSC Code Questions Answered
What is a PSC code?
A Product and Service Code (PSC) is a 4-character code used by the federal government to classify the products, services, and research and development purchased through government contracts. PSC codes appear on every solicitation posted to SAM.gov and are required on contract award data reported to USASpending.gov.
How is a PSC code different from a NAICS code?
NAICS codes classify your business — what industry you operate in. PSC codes classify what the government is buying in a specific contract. A single company might use one NAICS code but win contracts across many PSC codes. When bidding, you need both: your NAICS tells agencies what you are, your PSC tells them what you sell to them.
How do I find the right PSC code for my business?
Start by searching for keywords that describe what you deliver — software development, construction, maintenance, consulting. PSC codes are organized with letter prefixes for services (D = IT, R = Professional Services, Y = Construction) and number prefixes for products (70 = IT Equipment, 65 = Medical). Use this tool to search across all categories.
Do I need a PSC code to bid on government contracts?
You do not register a PSC code the way you register a NAICS code in SAM.gov. Instead, every solicitation will list the PSC code for what the agency wants to buy — and you look for solicitations where your capabilities match the PSC. Knowing your relevant PSC codes helps you search SAM.gov and other portals far more precisely than keyword searches alone.
Can a contract have multiple PSC codes?
A solicitation typically carries one primary PSC code that describes the principal purpose of the contract. IDIQ vehicles and broad service contracts sometimes span multiple PSCs. When searching for opportunities, searching by your top 3–5 PSC codes will surface far more relevant work than relying on a single code.
Where can I see past awards for a specific PSC code?
USASpending.gov lets you filter by PSC code to see historical award data including agency, awardee, and contract value. SAM.gov Beta also lets you filter active solicitations by PSC. BidStride aggregates both sources and delivers PSC-matched opportunities directly to your inbox.
